Alien Breed 3D II The Killing Grounds

ActivePlayableAmiga

About

This is an actively maintained, compilable rebuild ('Rebuilt') of the Alien Breed 3D II: The Killing Grounds engine, able to run the original game data or compatible mods. It's built via a GNU Make-compatible Makefile using Bebbo's Amiga cross-compiler, with separate build targets tuned for 68020/030, 68040, and 68060 processors.

How it differs from the original

Rebuilt behaves like the original release with two intentional exceptions: damage from dangerous floor surfaces only applies while actually in contact with them, and automatic aiming for projectile weapons can be disabled. It also adds support for RTG graphics cards alongside the native Amiga chipset, modernized WASD-plus-mouse controls, persistent player settings and statistics, and expanded modding hooks (custom per-level textures, a properties file for inventory limits and achievements) that the original release didn't have. A separate fan project, 'Redux', builds a reimagined mod on top of this engine.

Getting started

Players who just want to play the original game rather than build it are pointed to a ready-to-run release package containing the complete game with pre-built binaries optimized for different Amiga CPUs (68030/040/060), needing no original disks. Default controls use WASD for movement, C to crouch, F to interact, Space to jump or fly, and the left mouse button to fire, though the original mouse-driven scheme and full key rebinding are also available.

History

According to the project's own notes, the Killing Grounds codebase appears to have grown out of the earlier Alien Breed 3D source and was handled by a single developer without version control, leaving a messy source tree containing multiple overlapping versions.

Known limitations

  • rendering: Polygon rendering glitches are reduced but still present.
  • compatibility: RTG cards are supported only if a compatible 256-colour 320x240 or 320x256 screenmode is configured; native chipset is still required for menu rendering.

Additional notes

Known limitation
Returning to the main menu to change controls currently restarts the level in progress, according to the project's own list of outstanding issues.
