About
Amidar is a 1982 arcade game by Konami. Amidar500 is an attempted 1:1 port of the Konami arcade game Amidar to the Amiga 500 with 1MB of memory, aiming to reproduce the original visuals, sounds, enemy behavior, and increasing difficulty, including all regular and bonus levels and the original intro, while running at 50 frames per second (PAL) even on a base 68000 A500.
How it differs from the original
Rather than reusing the original Amidar game files directly, the port's graphics were recreated from arcade sprite rips, with the music and sound effects separately converted by other contributors for the Amiga hardware.
Getting started
It's controlled with a joystick in port 1 or via keyboard (arrow keys plus space), and runs either directly from the Amiga shell or under WHDLoad. Space or the fire button starts a game, P (or the second joystick button) pauses, and F10 quits while saving high scores. To clear a level you must eat all the dots (odd levels) or paint every zone (even levels, which can't be started from an already-unpainted zone); filling all four corner regions grants a temporary power state that lets you kill enemies, and staying too long draws out a pursuing 'white thief' enemy.
Known limitations
- display: Display is 4:3 so scores, lives, and bonuses are on the side rather than on top/bottom.
- rendering: Restore full 256-pixel wide layout.
- audio: Paint sound should stop with a slight increase of volume.
- input: Pause with second button does not work.
- gameplay: Small bits of paint not removed when rolling back.
- rendering: Sometimes palette mixups occur when enemies are frightened and some are hanging/falling/killed.
- audio: In very rare cases, power music does not loop properly.
- gameplay: Impossible to get 3200 points.
