About
Archaos is a modern remake of Chaos: The Battle of Wizards, rebuilt largely from scratch with Phaser 4, Vue 3, and Vite, using an isometric view and pixel art and sound based on the original 48K Spectrum game. It's playable now in the browser, supports up to 8 local players plus computer-controlled opponents, and includes tutorials, though development has been sporadic.
How it differs from the original
It adds a modernized mouse-driven UI, inline descriptions and help, and safeguards such as warning when a spell has no valid targets in range, plus 29 new spells and units on top of the original set. Online multiplayer and some planned new units/scenarios are not yet implemented, and a standalone desktop client (via Tauri) exists but hasn't been released.
Getting started
The current build can be played directly in a browser with no installation required. To build it from source, install Node.js, then run the project's install command followed by its start command to launch a local development server.
History
The project traces back to a 2003 document exploring possible updates to the original game, followed by several earlier and more ambitious attempts documented on the author's blog over roughly two decades, before arriving at this from-scratch web rewrite.
Known limitations
- features: Online multiplayer not yet implemented, though significant progress has been made toward it.
