About

Breach was originally an Amiga tactical squad-combat game in which player-controlled commandos fight through mission levels toward set victory conditions. Breach for Genesis is a port of the Amiga tactical game Breach to the Sega Genesis, written largely in 68000 assembly; it includes tools for converting the original Amiga level data into the Genesis format, plus a level editor (for terrain, objects, and commando loadouts) for adjusting the converted levels.

How it differs from the original

Enemy AI is simplified from the original: units now charge straight at the nearest player unit and keep attacking until out of movement, rather than attacking and then retreating as they did on the Amiga, and enemy commandos are limited to one grenade and one smoke bomb each (with unlimited rifle ammo). Level geometry also had to be adapted during conversion, since the Genesis version doesn't support diagonal walls — diamond-shaped rooms from the original Amiga levels were redrawn as box-shaped rooms.

Getting started

Missions are unlocked through a password system: successfully completing one mission gives a password that grants access to the next.

Additional notes

Save system
The password-based mission progression replaced an earlier mission-select-and-save system, dropped because the console's battery-backed memory was too small to fit the four save slots the original design called for.
