About

Dangerous Dave 2: Modification Edition is an open-source, highly customizable remake of Dangerous Dave 2 (Dangerous Dave in the Haunted Mansion), built as a moddable shell that loads external content packs; the author states the program code itself contains nothing copyrighted from the original game. It supports arbitrary level sizes and monster counts, animated tiles, a built-in MS-DOS-emulator-style console, and a launcher for switching between texture/monster/character/level/sound "packs"; a level editor is available through the Tiled map editor. As of the latest pre-beta release (v0.9, July 2022) it targets Windows.

How it differs from the original

The new level format is incompatible with the original Dangerous Dave 2's levels — a separate converter tool bridges the two — and the mod system supports third-party content packs, such as a "Dangerous Dave in Mario World" reskin, that don't exist in the original game.

Getting started

Default controls are the arrow keys to run/aim, left Ctrl to jump, and left Alt to shoot, all remappable via a config file. Additional level packs can be selected from the game's launcher before starting, and a level editor built on the Tiled map editor is included for creating custom content.

History

The project dates back to a 2013 SourceForge repository (no longer maintained there); the developer states they've worked on it for more than ten years.

Additional notes

Limitation
Source code for early versions 0.2 and 0.3 was lost — their release archives ship with empty source folders because the project wasn't under version control yet at that time.
Translation
Most of the accompanying English documentation was machine-translated from another language and may contain inconsistencies.
