Based on Turmoil

About

Data Storm is a Sega Master System clone of the Atari 2600 game Turmoil, built for SMS Power's homebrew coding competitions — an unfinished 2012 competition entry was resumed and completed for the 2016 competition. The player pilots a ship up and down a central alley, shooting waves of enemy craft that cross the screen; enemy types include Arrows that turn into Tanks if not destroyed in time, Tanks that can only be destroyed from behind, and time-limited Prize pickups that turn into an indestructible hazard if not collected quickly.

Getting started

Any button starts the game from its demo mode; the joypad moves the ship up/down the center alley and turns it left/right to face different lanes, and the ship fires automatically. Players start with five ships (up to six), losing one on collision with an enemy craft, and clearing all the aliens in a level grants a bonus ship.

History

The game was first started as an unfinished entry for SMS Power's 2012 homebrew coding competition; development was resumed four years later for the 2016 competition.
