About
Deathlord is a 1987 RPG for the Apple II and Commodore 64 that combines elements of Ultima and Wizardry; it's described as an unusually difficult game, harder even than Wizardry IV. Deathlord Relorded is a reworking of the original 1987 Deathlord that smooths over many of its frustrating aspects: it runs at 1920x1080 with much greater map visibility, updated visuals, an improved inventory system, and various bug fixes, while keeping the original dungeon puzzles and difficulty intact aside from removing permadeath. The original 1987 game code runs untouched underneath the new interface, so NPC and monster behavior matches the original exactly, and the original interface can be toggled back on at any time. Version 1.1 added the ability to individually toggle each modernization, letting players choose how close to the 1987 original they want the experience to be.
How it differs from the original
Permadeath has been removed, and the interface, resolution (1920x1080 versus the original's low-res display), map visibility, and inventory management have all been modernized — though the original 1987 interface, dungeon design, and difficulty (short of permadeath) remain accessible and unchanged, since the original game code runs underneath untouched.
Getting started
The game requires Windows 10 at a minimum resolution of 1920x1080. Players can press F11 at any time to switch to the original 1987 interface, and starting with version 1.1 can individually toggle each modernization to dial the experience between fully modern and fully original.
Known limitations
- platform: Requires a 1920x1080 display minimum, DirectX 12, Windows 10 x64, with working sound.
