About

Ultima VII is an early-1990s role-playing game (including its Serpent Isle expansion) that, per the project's own description, still has a large, enduring fan following. Exult is a from-scratch engine reimplementation that lets Ultima VII: The Black Gate and Ultima VII Part 2: Serpent Isle run on modern Windows, macOS, Linux, and Android systems, using the original DOS game's own data and graphics files rather than reverse-engineered assets. It's written in C++ with SDL for portability, fully supports finishing both games, and is actively maintained.

How it differs from the original

Exult doesn't bundle any original game data — players must own legal copies of Ultima VII: The Black Gate and/or Serpent Isle (its add-ons are optional but not required to run) and supply those files themselves.

Getting started

Point Exult at your own legally owned copy of Ultima VII: The Black Gate and/or Serpent Isle's data and graphics files, and it will run the game on modern Windows, macOS, Linux, or Android.

History

Exult's ability to read Ultima VII's original data formats relies on reverse-engineering work by several fans, credited in the project as Gary Thompson, Maxim Shatskih, Jakob Schonberg, and Wouter Dijkslag.

Requires original assets. Requires original Ultima VII: The Black Gate and/or Ultima VII Part 2: Serpent Isle game files to run.

Additional notes

Platform note
The project's CI also builds and tests for Linux (Ubuntu), FreeBSD, and iOS, beyond the Windows/macOS/Android builds most commonly distributed.
