About

Fallout is a post-apocalyptic role-playing game built around the SPECIAL character system, which lets players build different types of characters and make meaningful decisions while exploring the ruins of a devastated civilization. Fallout Community Edition is a fully working reimplementation of the original Fallout's engine, reproducing the same gameplay with engine bugfixes and quality-of-life improvements across Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS. It requires the player to own the original game (via GOG or Steam) and serves as a drop-in replacement for the Windows executable; a companion project, Fallout 2 Community Edition, covers the sequel.

How it differs from the original

The project is based on version 1.1 of the original game rather than the later v1.2, which added multilingual support the maintainers list as a goal to catch up on. Planned work also includes backporting some Fallout 2 engine features, adjusted for Fallout 1's different gameplay balance.

Getting started

Players must own the original Fallout (via GOG or Steam) and place its data files alongside the engine build. On Windows it's a drop-in replacement executable; Linux, macOS, Android and iOS each have their own setup steps, including extracting assets from the GOG installer with innoextract. Android and iOS use a touch-based, trackpad-style control scheme since the original interface is mouse-driven.

Requires original assets. You must own the original Fallout game; master.dat, critter.dat, and data folder are required.

Additional notes

License
The engine's source code is released under the Sustainable Use License rather than a standard open-source license.
