About

Freeserf is a remake that requires the original game's DOS or Amiga data files to run — it doesn't ship any original assets itself. It's playable on Windows, Linux and macOS and can load save games from both the original game and from Freeserf itself.

How it differs from the original

It requires the player to supply their own original DOS or Amiga data files rather than including any original assets, and it can load save games created by the original game in addition to its own saves.

Getting started

Copy the original game's data files (the DOS SPAx.PA file, or the Amiga gfxheader/gfxfast/gfxchip/gfxpics/sounds/music files) into the same folder as the freeserf executable or into ~/.local/share/freeserf, then launch it. Useful keys include 1-5 for panel buttons, TAB for notifications, +/- for game speed, and p to pause.

Known limitations

  • audio: Sound playback requires SDL2_mixer enabled at compile-time and sound patches available at runtime.
Requires original assets. Requires data files from original game (DOS: SPAE.PA/SPAD.PA/SPAF.PA/SPAU.PA or Amiga files like gfxheader, gfxfast, gfxchip, gfxpics, sounds, music).
