About

Gods is a game originally designed by the Bitmap Bros for Amiga and Sega systems, with music by Nation XII (John Foxx). Gods Deluxe is a beta-stage Java remake of Gods that aims for extreme fidelity to the original Amiga/Sega levels, featuring true-color graphics, reworked visuals, a level editor, a programming API for custom levels, and localization in French, English, German, and Hungarian. It runs on Windows, Linux, and macOS via Java Runtime 11 or higher, with optional joystick support on Windows.

How it differs from the original

Some minor inaccuracies remain compared to the original, tracked in the project's bug list, and the monster AI is a new implementation rather than a reproduction, since the original game's source code wasn't available to the remake's author. The remake also adds new content beyond the original: an additional JOTD level set and a separate RDG level set created decades after the original game's release.

Getting started

After downloading a release, run the included batch file on Windows or shell script on Linux/macOS to start the game; Linux users can alternatively install it via Flatpak. Levels unlock progressively as earlier ones are completed, and command-line options can skip the intro, jump directly into the last selected level, or enable a double-sized display.

Known limitations

  • gameplay: Some inaccuracies compared to the original game, documented in BUGS.txt.

Additional notes

Note
The project isn't under active development, but the author still accepts community-submitted levels made with the built-in level editor.
