About
HoverRace is a racing game created by GrokkSoft in 1996 as shareware, notable for an early claim to being the first internet-based online multiplayer game. This repository is the unstable development branch of HoverRace, continuing the codebase that original developer Richard Langlois opened to the public after GrokkSoft stopped maintaining the game. It supports single-player and multiplayer (split-screen and internet) racing, with hundreds of user-created tracks available for download.
How it differs from the original
This continuation targets modern Windows (7 or later) and current Linux distributions, rather than the original 1990s shareware release, and has accumulated hundreds of community-made tracks not present in the original game.
Getting started
Download and play the latest release from the project's website, which supports both single-player racing and multiplayer over split-screen or the internet; hundreds of additional user-created tracks can also be downloaded separately.
History
HoverRace was abandoned by GrokkSoft in the late 1990s and sat unmaintained for years until original developer Richard Langlois released its source code publicly; development has continued since then to keep the game running on modern systems.
