About
Turrican is a 1990 run-and-gun game designed by Manfred Trenz, developed by Factor 5 and published by Rainbow Arts, first released for the Commodore 64 before being ported to other systems. A sequel, Turrican II, followed in 1991. This repository is a community-maintained fork of Hurrican, a freeware jump-and-shoot tribute to Turrican originally created by Poke53280 (Eiswuxe). The fork enables SDL2 by default, adds CRT screen-simulation effects and libopenmpt music support, and uses XDG-compliant data/config paths on UNIX systems; it is built with CMake and supports multiple OpenGL rendering backends for Windows and Linux.
How it differs from the original
This fork modernizes the original freeware Hurrican with SDL2 rendering, added CRT shader simulation, and Linux-friendly configuration paths, while still being based on the fan-made Hurrican codebase rather than Turrican's own original code.
Getting started
Clone the repository with its submodules and build it using CMake, then run the resulting program from the project directory; a command-line help option lists available runtime settings.
History
Hurrican was originally created by Poke53280 (Eiswuxe) as a freeware tribute to Turrican, with further development contributed over time by Pickle136, Stefan Schmidt (thrimbor), and Leandro Nini (drfiemost) before this fork took over maintenance.
