About

Deadly Rooms of Death (DROD) is a puzzle video game created by Erik Hermansen, originally published by Webfoot Technologies in 1996; the author reacquired the rights and released the source code in 2000, continuing development as Caravel DROD. HyperRogue is a puzzle roguelike set on the hyperbolic plane, written in modern C++ and released under the GPLv2. Players explore a procedurally generated non-Euclidean world made up of over 60 distinct "lands," collecting treasure and magical orbs while avoiding monsters drawn in by that collecting. It also supports alternate geometries (Euclidean, spherical, nonisotropic 3D) and additional game modes, including racing and puzzle variants, through its RogueViz extension.

Getting started

Move with the numpad, vi-style keys, or the mouse, collecting treasure while avoiding monsters that become more aggressive the more you collect; rare magical orbs grant special one-time or timed abilities. Compiled builds are available for download, including via itch.io, or the game can be built from source using the project's own build tooling.

History

HyperRogue has been developed by Zeno Rogue since at least 2012, and its RogueViz engine for non-Euclidean visualizations has been partly funded by a National Science Centre (Poland) grant.
