About

Out Run is a 1986 Sega arcade racing game known for its pioneering hardware and graphics, nonlinear route selection, a soundtrack by Hiroshi Kawaguchi, and its hydraulic motion-simulator cabinet; the goal is to avoid traffic and reach one of five destinations before time runs out. Javascript Pseudo 3D Racer is an Outrun-style pseudo-3D racing tech demo built in HTML5/JavaScript across four incremental, documented stages (straight roads, curves, hills, and a final version), with an accompanying blog series explaining how each part works. The author explicitly frames it as a teaching demo rather than a finished game, and notes performance is highly dependent on the browser and GPU driver.

How it differs from the original

The sprite graphics are placeholder art borrowed from the Sega Genesis port of Out Run rather than original artwork, and by the author's own account the project stops at a bare tech demo — it has no destinations, checkpoints, competing traffic AI, or other racers, unlike the arcade original's route-and-destination structure.

Getting started

Four incremental versions are playable directly in the browser via linked game pages — a straight-road-only build, then versions adding curves, hills, and the full game — with in-game controls to adjust rendering resolution and draw distance to suit slower machines.

Known limitations

  • platform: Performance is very machine/browser dependent; current state of mobile browser performance is dismal and not playable on mobile devices.
