About

Kroz is Apogee Software's own 2009 freeware re-release, with source code, of its 1987 debut game — a text/ASCII-graphics roguelike-inspired action game for DOS. It had been removed from Apogee's product line for many years before this release; because it predates modern Windows, it typically needs an emulator like DOSBox to run at the right speed today.

Getting started

The freeware package includes the original DOS executable along with its source code. Since the game runs far too fast on modern Windows versions, playing it normally means running it through a DOS emulator such as DOSBox; the publisher offers no official support for getting it working.

History

The game holds particular significance as Apogee Software's first-ever release, made by founder Scott Miller in late 1987, and it introduced the "first episode free" shareware model that went on to define Apogee's business for years afterward.

Known limitations

  • compatibility: Runs too fast on modern Windows systems; DOSBox emulation recommended.

The 2009 freeware release is not public domain or open-source: Apogee retains full rights to the game and its materials, and commercial reuse or resale is prohibited.
