About

Echochrome is a 2008 puzzle game developed by Sony's Japan Studio for the PlayStation Portable (with a PS3 version the same year), in which a mannequin figure traverses a rotatable world of Escher-inspired impossible constructions, with physics depending on the camera's perspective. L-Echo is a free, open-source clone of Echochrome (known as Mugen Kairou in Japan), originally written for Linux and later ported to Windows, Mac OS X 10.4+ (excluding PPC64), and the Nintendo DS — the DS port is a separate build in the same source tree, named N-Echo.

History

The original developer halted work on the project in March 2009, citing their own coding practices as an obstacle to continued maintenance, and said they'd be willing to teach the underlying concepts to anyone who wanted to continue it. A guide to creating custom stages was finished in July 2009 ahead of a homebrew-contest release of the N-Echo (DS) build.

Known limitations

  • development: Project is no longer actively developed as of March 2009 due to code maintenance issues.
