About
M.A.X.: Mechanized Assault & Exploration is a hybrid real-time/turn-based strategy game by Interplay Productions, released for MS-DOS in 1994 with a Windows conversion following in 2017; players colonize newly discovered planets and defend their colony against rival factions. MAXR (Mechanized Assault & eXploration Reloaded) is a fan-made, community-maintained turn-based strategy remake of M.A.X., built specifically to make its multiplayer work reliably on modern networks and systems. It supports Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux (and likely other UNIX-like systems with SDL2 and CMake available).
How it differs from the original
For copyright reasons, MAXR doesn't ship the original's graphics, sounds, videos, maps, or music — players must supply those themselves, either via the included resinstaller tool using an owned M.A.X. CD, or by buying the game on GOG.com.
Getting started
If you own an original M.A.X. CD, the included resinstaller tool can automatically install the original graphics, sounds, videos, maps, and music. If you don't, the game can be bought from GOG.com and used the same way. Build instructions for each supported platform are maintained in the project's wiki.
