About

Robotron: 2084 is a 1982 twin-stick arcade shooter by Eugene Jarvis and Larry DeMar of Vid Kidz, released by Williams Electronics. Mojotron: Robot Wars is an SDL2-based arcade shooter descended from Robotron, in which the player clears each level of monsters with movement independent of firing direction. It builds for Linux and Windows, and the README states the conversion is not complete.

How it differs from the original

It adds a level time limit (finishing early skips three levels and grants an extra life), collectible fruit combos that award power-ups and lives, and activatable power-ups such as a flamethrower, shrinker, teleport, bomb, crate barricade and ram droid. Alternate graphics and game constants can be loaded from custom resource files, including the original graphics set.

Getting started

Prebuilt Windows and Linux binaries are available on the developer's itch.io page; unzip and run. To build from source you need SDL2, SDL2_image, SDL2_mixer and expat. Aim with WASD, move with the cursor keys, use space to activate power-ups and P to pause; firing is automatic.

History

The game was originally written by Craig Timpany and is now maintained by a different developer.

Known limitations

  • completeness: The Mojotron: Robot Wars conversion is not complete; ideas and patches are welcome.

Additional notes

Command line
Options include --fullscreen, sound and music toggles, demo recording, and -f to load an alternate resource file.
