About

U95 (shown as U-95 on its title screen) was made in 1995 by the Russian studio NIKITA for Windows 3.x, and was well known in the 1990s Russian-speaking gaming community. O21 is a free and open-source MIT-licensed remake of U95. Some engine features have been implemented, but the game is not yet playable. It is a black-box reimplementation written by studying data files and watching the original game run.

How it differs from the original

No assets from the original game are included; the program is designed to use U-95's resources, which the user must supply.

Getting started

Download the latest build for your platform from the releases page and run the O21.Game binary; it starts with default settings when run without arguments.

History

The original game is probably named after the German submarine U-95, which was sunk by the Dutch submarine O 21, so the authors named the remake O21.

Known limitations

  • completeness: Some of the game engine features have been implemented, but the game is not in a playable state.
Requires original assets. The project is designed to use resources of the U-95 game by NIKITA.

Additional notes

Legal
The project lead notes that U95's distribution license is unknown, making it de facto abandonware, and that the project is not affiliated with NIKITA.
