About
RuneScape Classic (RSC) was an online game that was shut down on August 6, 2018, after running for nearly 18 years. Open RSC is a reimplementation of RuneScape Classic, built through black-box reverse engineering and review of thousands of hours of RSC+ replays to match the original as closely as possible. It includes a rewritten server framework plus a client, requires Java 8 or newer, and the team runs free public worlds.
How it differs from the original
Server configurations can switch on features absent from the original without code changes, such as Runecrafting, custom sprites, faster game speed, higher experience rates, new quests, an auction house, clans, parties, pets and holiday events. The server framework was also rewritten to scale beyond the original's limits.
Getting started
You can play on the team's hosted public worlds via the project website, or run a server locally by following its Windows, macOS or Linux getting-started guides. Running both server and client needs about 2 GB of RAM and JDK 8 or newer.
History
The project started in June 2018 and builds on earlier RSC private-server projects dating back to 2004–2005, including RSCDaemon, RSCAngel, RSCRevolution and RSCLegacy.
