OpenBOR
About
Double Dragon (1987), Final Fight (1989) and Streets of Rage (1991) are side-scrolling beat 'em ups from Technōs Japan, Capcom and Sega respectively. OpenBOR is a royalty-free, sprite-based side-scrolling game engine optimized for beat 'em up games but able to handle other styles, with a built-in script engine. Games are made as modules, many of which are available from the ChronoCrash community. Its first official 4.0 build was released in 2024.
How it differs from the original
It is a game-making engine rather than a copy of one game: authors build their own modules and can even sell original games made with it.
Getting started
Download OpenBOR and ready-made game modules from the ChronoCrash community site; it supports Windows, Linux, macOS and Android.
History
It grew out of Beats of Rage, a free 2003 DOS beat 'em up by Senile Team. In 2005 Senile Team agreed to open its source at developer Kirby2000's request, creating OpenBOR, and the repository moved from SourceForge to GitHub in 2017.
Additional notes
- Roadmap
- As of 2026 the team is removing legacy console-port code and refining the engine and build tools.
