About

Jazz Jackrabbit is a PC platform game produced by Epic MegaGames and first released in 1994; it won PC Format's Arcade Game of the Year award. OpenJazz is a free, open-source GPLv2+ version of the classic Jazz Jackrabbit games, running on Windows, macOS, Linux, BSD and several homebrew consoles and handhelds, and in the browser. It is playable and includes multiplayer, bonus levels, movie playback and the menu plasma effect.

How it differs from the original

It brings the DOS original to modern and homebrew platforms without emulation and adds multiplayer, first released in 2009.

Getting started

You need the data files from one of the original games; run OpenJazz with the files beside the executable, or pass the game folder as a command-line argument. A browser version can be played at openjazz.github.io.

History

AJ Thomson started OpenJazz on 23 August 2005, released the source that December and the first playable version on 15 January 2006. It moved to GitHub in 2014, and development has since slowed, with maintainer Carsten Teibes cleaning up the code and merging ports.
