About
Need for Speed III: Hot Pursuit is a 1998 Electronic Arts racing game for PlayStation and Windows that made police pursuits a major part of gameplay. OpenNFS is an early-development attempt to recreate the classic Need for Speed games (1-5) in a new engine that loads their original data files. It currently loads cars, tracks and music from several PC and PlayStation titles, with Bullet physics and new dynamic lighting and shadows, but gameplay is not yet implemented.
How it differs from the original
It adds dynamic lighting and shadows through new shaders, and planned features include free roam across an open world combining all classic NFS tracks, and multiplayer.
Getting started
Download a release or a CI build for Windows, macOS or Linux, then supply files from your own copy of the original games, as instructed on the release page; no EA content is bundled.
Known limitations
- compatibility: Some titles fail to load in current builds of OpenNFS due to a large parser refactor.
- asset loading: NFS5 formats are known, but a stable parser has not yet been integrated.
Additional notes
- Assets
- Asset support varies by title: NFS3 PC cars and tracks load fully, while NFS1 PC is not supported and NFS5 lacks a stable parser.
