OpenRCT2

About
RollerCoaster Tycoon 2 is a 2002 amusement-park management simulation developed by Chris Sawyer and published by Infogrames, the sequel to 1999's RollerCoaster Tycoon. OpenRCT2 is an open-source re-implementation of RollerCoaster Tycoon 2 that aims to provide everything from the original plus many improvements. It runs on Windows, macOS, Linux and Android, supports both scenario and sandbox play, and is actively developed under the GPLv3.
How it differs from the original
Additions over the original include support for modern platforms, an improved interface, better guest and staff AI, more editing tools, increased limits and cooperative multiplayer. It also brings back RollerCoaster Tycoon 1 mechanics missing from RCT2, such as the in-game mountain tool, the "have fun" objective and launched coasters.
Getting started
You need the original RollerCoaster Tycoon 2 game files (sold on Steam and GOG). Portable builds, installers and an auto-updating launcher are offered on openrct2.io, Linux users can install it via Flatpak or distribution packages, and original RCT1 files can be pointed to in order to play its scenarios.
History
RollerCoaster Tycoon 2 was originally written by Chris Sawyer in x86 assembly on an engine derived from Transport Tycoon, which has its own open-source counterpart, OpenTTD.
Additional notes
- Plugins
- OpenRCT2 has a documented scripting API for plug-ins, with an unofficial plug-in directory maintained by the community.
- Asset replacement
- Companion projects (OpenGraphics, OpenMusic) are working on replacement graphics and audio for the game.
