About

Swarm Assault is a game released in 1999; the OpenSA README notes it has not been sold for over 20 years and treats it as abandonware. OpenSA recreates Swarm Assault on the OpenRA engine, aiming to stay faithful to the original while adding modern controls and quality-of-life improvements. The project describes itself as highly complete: all 100 original missions are recreated and several extra levels are added, with only cosmetic or minor work left.

How it differs from the original

It adds multiplayer, Windows/macOS/Linux support, HD resolutions, smooth zooming, rally points, an advanced map and mission editor, and support for custom units. It drops the random map generator but can convert legacy maps.

Getting started

Download the latest stable version from the project's releases, or build it with the included make scripts and launch it with the launch-game script. On first launch the original game's assets (not its executables) are downloaded automatically.

History

The last publisher, Mountain King Studios, confirmed it no longer holds the IP or has contact with the original developers.

Requires original assets. Requires original Swarm Assault game assets; they are downloaded automatically on first launch.
