Portal 64: Still Alive

About

Portal is Valve's 2007 puzzle-platform game, originally released for Windows, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3 before being ported to other platforms. Portal 64: Still Alive is a fan-made demake of Valve's Portal for the Nintendo 64, continuing development after the original author's repository was taken down at Valve's request over a proprietary Nintendo library dependency. This fork removes that dependency and has implemented seventeen test chambers with working portals, a physics engine, lighting, menus, sound, dialogue, cutscenes, and multi-language subtitles.

How it differs from the original

Unlike the original, this is a from-scratch N64 build that requires players to supply their own legally owned copy of Portal, since its assets are extracted from the original game files rather than recreated; no compiled ROM is distributed because building one still currently requires Nintendo's proprietary libultra library.

Getting started

You must legally own Portal and supply its game files yourself so assets can be extracted before building; the project provides setup guides for building via Docker or a native Linux/WSL toolchain, and the resulting cartridge build needs 32 KB of SRAM to save properly.

History

The project began as James Lambert's original portal64 repository, which was taken down after Valve requested its removal over its reliance on Nintendo's proprietary libultra library; development continues in this fork with a goal of removing that dependency entirely.

Requires original assets. Requires legally obtained Portal game files; original Portal assets must be supplied at build time.
