About

Buzz Aldrin's Race Into Space (BARIS) is a 1993 MS-DOS space-program strategy game by Strategic Visions and Interplay, based on Fritz Bronner's 1989 board game Liftoff!, in which the player leads NASA or the Soviet program in a race to land on the Moon; a 1994 CD-ROM re-release added multiplayer modes. Race Into Space is the free-software continuation of Buzz Aldrin's Race Into Space, built from the original source code and actively maintained with a Boost.Test-based automated test suite, CMake/vcpkg builds, and packaged releases for Windows, Linux, and macOS (the latest, 2.0.0, from March 2025).

How it differs from the original

The game's original music was excluded from the public source release for copyright reasons and has to be obtained from a separate companion repository to restore it; otherwise this continues the original commercial game rather than reinterpreting it.

Getting started

Download a prebuilt release package for Windows, Linux, or macOS from the project's release page, or build it yourself with CMake and vcpkg. Multiplayer games and general discussion happen in the project's community chat space, which is also where to get help.

History

The game began as Interplay's 1992 disk-based release of Buzz Aldrin's Race Into Space, gained a CD-ROM re-release with multiplayer support in 1994, and was later reworked into this actively maintained free-software continuation after its source code was released.
