About

The Lotus series (Lotus Esprit Turbo Challenge, Lotus Turbo Challenge 2, and Lotus III) was a trio of well-reviewed racing games published by Gremlin Graphics between 1990 and 1992, originally created for the Amiga by Shaun Southern and Andrew Morris of Magnetic Fields. RacerJS (Racer 10k) is a browser-based tribute to the Lotus racing series, rendered full-screen using CSS Transform. Each race track is randomly generated, and the goal is to finish it as quickly as possible, with results shareable via Tweet.

How it differs from the original

Unlike the original Lotus games, tracks are randomly generated each playthrough rather than fixed courses, and it runs entirely in a web browser using CSS-transform rendering instead of native code.

Getting started

Play in a browser using the arrow keys — up/down to accelerate and brake, left/right to steer — and try to complete the randomly generated race as quickly as possible. If it runs slowly (a known issue in Firefox and Chrome, since full-screen display relies on CSS Transform), try resizing the browser window.

Known limitations

  • performance: CSS Transform rendering can be slow in Firefox and Chrome; window resizing may help.
