About

Rally-X is a 1980 Namco arcade maze game in which the player drives a car through a scrolling maze collecting flags while avoiding boulders and red enemy cars, which can be temporarily stunned with a fuel-limited smoke screen. This is a port of Namco's Rally-X to the Commodore Amiga, built by reverse-engineering the original Z80 arcade code and transcoding it to 68000 assembly, with converted graphics, sound, and music. It's available in separate AGA (full original colors) and ECS (reduced-color) versions.

How it differs from the original

The ECS version has to reduce the original arcade game's color palette, though the difference is described as barely noticeable, and performance can suffer on slower Amiga hardware because the game logic was ported closely around the original Z80-oriented design rather than rewritten for 68000 performance.

Getting started

Play with a 1-button joystick or the keyboard: arrows or joystick to move, a button to insert a coin and start, and another to lay down a smoke screen (which costs fuel) to stun pursuing cars. Pick the AGA build for accurate original colors, or the ECS build for older Amiga hardware.

Known limitations

  • performance: Game will not work properly on slow machines due to Z80 architecture design.
