About

Magus is a classic 8-bit role-playing game created by Ronny Wester; this project describes itself as an extended, browser-based remake of it. Rot Magus is a browser-based roguelike turn-based RPG built with rot.js and Phaser, extending the classic 8-bit game Magus with a procedurally generated infinite map, dozens of monsters, items, and spells. As of its latest v0.6.0 release (November 2019), it includes a full magic system, a map seed browser, high scores, and adjustable game speed.

How it differs from the original

Unlike the original Magus, this remake adds an infinite, procedurally generated map (using simplex noise) rather than fixed levels, along with an expanded magic system, summonable monsters, and features still in development like structures, a maze layer, and multiple playable adventurers.

Getting started

Move by clicking on terrain (or holding to move continuously), attack monsters by clicking on them (melee if adjacent, ranged from a distance), and manage equipment and inventory through click-based slots; the game also includes a map seed browser and high score tracking.

History

Development is tracked through numbered versions from v0.3.0 (January 2015), the first real pre-release, through v0.6.0 (November 2019), each adding new monsters, items, biomes, and systems.
