About

ScummVM is a reimplementation of the engines behind classic point-and-click adventure games and role-playing games, letting the player use their own copy of a game's data files instead of that game's original executable. It was originally built for LucasArts' SCUMM-engine titles like Maniac Mansion and the Monkey Island series, and has since expanded to support engines for many other adventure and RPG titles, including Broken Sword, Myst, and Blade Runner.

How it differs from the original

Rather than distributing any game content itself, ScummVM only replaces the original executable — players must supply their own legally obtained copy of each game's data files.

Getting started

Download and install ScummVM, then copy each game's original data files (not the original executables) into their own directory. In ScummVM, use "Add Game" and point it at that directory, or use "Mass Add" to scan multiple subdirectories for several games at once, configure any per-game settings, then select the game from the list and press Start.

History

The name ScummVM comes from SCUMM (Script Creation Utility for Maniac Mansion), the tool LucasArts built to develop Maniac Mansion and reused for later adventure games; "VM" stands for Virtual Machine.

Requires original assets. Requires original game data files from supported games to run.
