About

Tunneler is a DOS game originally created by Geoffrey Silverton in 1991, in which two players sharing one keyboard and screen each control an underground tank, using a split-screen view to search for and destroy the other's tank. SDL Tunneler is an SDL-based port of the original Tunneler for Linux and Windows, made by Taneli Kalvas in 2003 using standard SDL graphics modes in place of the original's specially crafted text-mode display.

How it differs from the original

Uses ordinary SDL graphics modes instead of the original's 80x50 text-mode display, which relied on a specially designed font to fake a 160x100 "graphics" resolution on period 6 MHz PCs.

Getting started

Built with GNU autotools (configure, then make and make install); the game defaults to an 800x600 window on first launch, with resolution and fullscreen changeable via the in-game settings menu or command-line flags. Both players share one keyboard, with key bindings configurable in the settings menu.

History

The port was made because its developer wanted a native Linux version of the original DOS game and to experiment with the SDL library.
