Sonic CD Disassembly

About

Sonic CD is a 1993 platform game Sega released for the Sega CD, in which Sonic travels through time to reach alternate versions of stages while stopping Doctor Robotnik, and which introduced the characters Amy Rose and Metal Sonic. Sonic CD Disassembly is an incomplete disassembly of the Sega CD game, reconstructing pieces such as the main and system programs, the sound driver, several stage music banks, the title screen, and the FMV and special-stage code. It builds into a working ISO only once the remaining original Sonic CD files are supplied separately by the user, and the current maintainer describes the work as unfinished.

Getting started

Building it means combining the disassembled source with the rest of the original Sonic CD files, placed in the project's "original" folder, which together produce a working Sega CD disc image.

History

Work traces back to 2015, when early progress on the first act of Palmtree Panic was made with help from contributors flamewing and TheStoneBanana; the current maintainer revived the project in 2025 as a new home for it, hoping to draw further contributions.

Known limitations

  • development: Disassembly is incomplete; many levels and features remain undocumented.
Requires original assets. Requires original Sonic CD files in the original folder to build a working ISO.

Additional notes

Development status
The maintainer states they no longer have the time or motivation to continue the disassembly themselves.
