About
Space Ace is a 1983 LaserDisc arcade game from Bluth Group, Cinematronics, and Advanced Microcomputer Systems, using full-motion animation played back from a laserdisc, released shortly after Dragon's Lair. Space Ace IIgs is a reverse-engineered reconstruction of ReadySoft's 1990 Apple IIgs port of Space Ace, rebuilt from disassembled 65816 code back into source. The author rewrote the original floppy-disk/ProDOS version to run from a hard disk under GS/OS, and the released archive includes the source, build tools, and Mac/Windows builds of the assembler needed to compile it.
How it differs from the original
Unlike the original 1990 ReadySoft floppy release, this version is rewritten to run from an Apple IIgs hard disk using GS/OS instead of ProDOS and floppy disks.
Getting started
The archive includes the full 65816 assembly source along with the Brutal Deluxe assembler and Python-based build scripts needed to compile it; the author reports successfully building and running it on both Mac (via the Sweet16 emulator) and Windows (via Kegs).
History
The author originally created this Apple IIgs hard-disk port in 1990 after being unhappy that ReadySoft's official release only supported floppy disks, then rediscovered and published the source from an old archive CD in 2015.
