About

Space Harrier is a 1985 Sega arcade rail shooter designed by Yu Suzuki, in which the player flies a jet-propelled character through surreal fantasy landscapes; the deluxe arcade cabinet was a motion-simulator cockpit that pitched and rolled during play. Space Harrier Clone is a tribute to the original arcade game, built with SDL2 on top of the author's own small 2D 'Potato Engine.' It recreates the core gameplay of flying through a level while shooting enemies and closing out with a boss fight against a snake-dragon, and ships as a ready-to-run Windows executable with no installation needed.

How it differs from the original

The tribute only includes the first of the original arcade game's 18 levels.

Getting started

Download the zipped release from the project's GitHub releases page, unzip it, and run the included executable directly; no installation is required. Movement uses the arrow keys, Left Control fires, Space starts the game, and Q 'inserts a coin' for three lives as a nod to the game's arcade origins.

Known limitations

  • content: Only the first level of Space Harrier is included; the original game featured 18 different levels.
