About
Super Cars and Super Cars II are top-down racing games from Magnetic Fields/Gremlin, originally released for the Amiga and Atari ST in the early 1990s, with Super Cars II later reissued for MS-DOS as Super Cars International. Supercars III is a Java remake by JOTD combining Super Cars and Super Cars II, with high-resolution rendered graphics, enhanced sound, a 2-player mode, all 21 Super Cars II circuits plus all 10 Super Cars circuits, and a circuit editor for building custom tracks. It runs on Windows XP/7 and macOS, and has a dedicated Pandora port.
How it differs from the original
It enhances the originals with high-resolution and rendered graphics, multicolored cars, custom circuit support via a built-in editor, and optional remixed title and menu music, while trying to keep the "Supercars II spirit."
Getting started
On Windows, run the Supercars3.bat file; on Linux, run Supercars3.sh — both located in the bin subdirectory. It requires Java Runtime 1.5 or higher. Arrows plus Space (or a joypad) control player 1, and the numeric pad plus 0 controls player 2.
History
The author started the project in December 2004 and had to pause development for roughly a year due to other projects, a move, and job changes before continuing.
Known limitations
- audio: Music is available but players should note that some original SC1 music is unavailable in mod format.
- compatibility: GFX problems with JRE 1.6 in full-screen mode; cars not displayed properly under tunnels, but works in windowed mode.
- ai: AI can become stuck going backwards against walls in some situations.
