About

Tails Adventure is a 1995 Game Gear platformer developed by Aspect and published by Sega, starring Tails in a slower-paced, metroidvania-style solo adventure across Cocoa Island where collected items open up new paths through previously explored areas. Tails Adventure Remake rebuilds the original Game Gear game from the ground up in C++ without a game engine, targeting modern Windows, Linux, and Android. It adds quality-of-life improvements (responsive controls, pause menu, item hotswapping), adjustable display resolution and refresh rate, keyboard/gamepad/touchscreen input with rumble and remappable controls, automatic saving, and a mod system for custom assets; the game is fully playable and can be completed 100%.

How it differs from the original

The remake rebalances enemies, bosses, and overall difficulty compared to the original, and is still missing a handful of original features: the Wrench, Sonic, and Item Radar items, most in-game cutscenes, the hover pod's bullet and fire attacks, Tails' idle animation, and rotated helmet frames.

Getting started

Binary releases for Windows, Android, and Linux are available from the project's Releases page, or it can be built from source using the project's own build guide. Default controls use the arrow keys to move, Z to jump, and C to use an item, all remappable in the options menu.

Known limitations

  • completeness: Missing items: Wrench, Sonic, Item Radar; most in-game cutscenes not yet implemented.
  • completeness: Hover pod bullet and fire attacks, and Tails idle animation not yet implemented.
