About
The Bard's Tale III: Thief of Fate is a 1988 game published by Interplay Productions, originally distributed on Commodore 64 floppy disks. This project builds an EasyFlash cartridge image of Bard's Tale III for the Commodore 64 from the original game's own floppy disk images. It adds save-game import/export and a character editor, and removes the need for the original's copy-protection codewheel.
How it differs from the original
No codewheel is required to play, unlike the original release, and the project adds a character editor and the ability to import and export save games — features not part of the 1988 original. No copy of the original game is included; building it requires the player's own original disk images.
Getting started
To build it, place your own original Bard's Tale III Commodore 64 disk images (boot, character, and two dungeon disks) in a disks folder, then build with the required tools (cc65, VICE's cartconv and c1541, Python, GNU Make, and a C compiler) via make; the output is an EasyFlash .crt cartridge image.
