About

The Castles of Dr. Creep is a reimplementation of the original 1984 Commodore 64 game of the same name, created by Ed Hobbs. This is an open source reimplementation of Dr. Creep's original C64 game, playable on Linux, macOS, Windows and Wii and also sold on Steam. Players explore thirteen timed castles, solving puzzles and traps, alone or cooperatively with a second player. The project adds a built-in castle Builder for creating or editing castles, and its save files (D64 disk images) are compatible with the original Commodore 64 game's saves.

How it differs from the original

The main addition over the original is a built-in castle Builder for creating new castles or editing existing ones; aside from that, the project preserves save-game compatibility with the original C64 release.

Getting started

Playing requires a Commodore 64 disk image (D64) of the original game placed in the project's data folder (the Steam release bundles what's needed). Up to two players can play using keyboard or joystick controls, and command-line flags allow unlimited lives or starting at a specific castle number.

History

The original game's creator, Ed Hobbs, has described writing it in 1984 on primitive C64 tools: the C64 assembler of the time couldn't handle programs over 16kb, so he wrote and assembled the source on an Apple II and transferred the compiled binary to the C64 over cables connected to the two machines' joystick ports, working from hand-drawn flowcharts and level-layout diagrams since there was no C64 debugger or level editor available.
