About

The Colony is the official source code release of David A. Smith's 1988 Macintosh 3D adventure/shooter, published here under the Apache 2.0 license. This repository includes the Macintosh, PC, and Amiga versions — the PC and Amiga ports were done by David W Easter.

Getting started

Gameplay demos are linked on YouTube in the readme; the repository provides the source code and box/screenshot images for the Macintosh, PC, and Amiga versions of the original release rather than a ready-to-run build.

History

Developed largely solo by David A. Smith starting around 1983-1984 on an original Macintosh, The Colony was published by Mindscape in 1988 and went on to win MacWorld's 'Best Adventure Game of the Year'; Smith later worked on James Cameron's 'The Abyss' and co-founded Red Storm Entertainment with Tom Clancy, who became an early fan and investor after playing the game.

Additional notes

History
According to the author's memoir included in the readme, Mindscape's QA found only 12 bugs in the finished game — a low count the author attributes to years of tool development before the game itself was built.
