About
Tornado is a terminal-based (ncurses) weather-combat game for Linux supporting single-player, multiplayer, and network play, with an online highscore submission system, released under the GNU GPL.
Getting started
Build and install it with make (requires a C compiler, ncurses, and GNU make/utils), then run it from a real text console rather than a terminal emulator window for effects like the lightning flash to display correctly; leave a player's name blank to have the built-in computer take that slot.
History
The game was first announced on Freshmeat around April 23, 2000, reportedly drawing about 500 hits and 200 downloads within its first 12 hours; this readme was last revised in September 2002.
Known limitations
- display: Terminal window must be at least 80x25; standard 80x24 terminals will have the bottom status line cut off.
- audio: Screen flash effects for lightning do not work reliably in xterm or other terminal emulators, only on text console.
