About
Uncharted Waters is a 1990 video game published by Koei, the first entry in the Uncharted Waters series, released in Japan as 大航海時代. Uncharted Waters 2 Remake (self-described by the author as Uncharted Waters: New Horizons) is a web-based, in-progress remake with a canvas-rendered game world and a React-based interface. It currently supports walking around all 130 in-game ports and entering their buildings, and sailing the world map with speed calculations that account for the same factors as the original game.
How it differs from the original
The author is explicit that this isn't meant to be a full remake — major original systems like markets (trading), shipyards (buying/remodeling ships), and pubs (crew recruitment) are still on the roadmap and not yet implemented.
Getting started
The current build can be played directly in a browser at the developer's own site, with no installation needed.
History
It's a personal side project by a web developer who calls the original game a favorite from childhood, built partly in spare time to show prospective consulting clients their code.
