About

Anno 1602 is a 1998 construction-and-management game by Max Design in which players build colonies across an archipelago, balancing resources, exploration, diplomacy and trade, with a 'progressive' AI whose pace adapts to how quickly the player acts. This is an early-stage Godot 4 port of Unknown Horizons, a 2D real-time-strategy economy and city-building game in the Anno-1602 mold: settle a small colony, grow it into a wealthy trading power, and manage taxes, goods and diplomacy along the way. The Godot rewrite currently has no playable content — the maintainers point players toward the original, long-running (non-Godot) Unknown Horizons project in the meantime.

Getting started

There's no playable release yet: the Godot port can be opened directly in the Godot 4 editor with no compilation needed, but it has no playable content, so anyone who wants to actually play the game is directed to the original, non-Godot version of Unknown Horizons instead.

History

The Godot port was started because the original project's engine and GUI library had both become effectively unmaintained; the original (non-Godot) Unknown Horizons codebase has roughly a decade of active development behind it.

Community-made maps can be dropped into a per-platform user data folder and are picked up automatically, either via a maps manifest file or as individual map scene files.
