About

Vangers is a 1998 racing role-playing video game developed by Russian studio K-D Lab, later re-released on Steam and GOG.com in 2014 with Mac OS X and Linux support. Vange-rs is a Rust reimplementation of the Vangers engine that aims to replicate the original's look and behavior with native hardware-accelerated graphics, using wgpu, winit, and egui. It ships as several binaries: a main game (road) with mechouses and items, a 3D model viewer, a level viewer, and a resource converter.

How it differs from the original

Unlike the original DOS/Windows game, Vange-rs renders levels using modern hardware-accelerated graphics APIs, including an experimental voxelized ray-tracing rendering method described on the project's blog.

Getting started

Playing with mechouses requires a copy of the original Vangers game data (the Fostral world files published in the open-source Vangers tree); after cloning both repositories, `cargo run` launches the main game, using WSAD to move, left shift for turbo, and left alt to jump.

Requires original assets. The original Vangers game is required to try out vange-rs with mechouses; Fostral world data must be obtained separately.
