About
Warcraft II: Tides of Darkness is a fantasy real-time strategy game developed by Blizzard Entertainment, released for MS-DOS and Windows in 1995 and Mac OS in 1996; it won major PC gaming awards and was later followed by an expansion and compilation releases. Wargus is a remake/mod that lets you play Warcraft II using the open-source Stratagus engine. It aims to look and sound exactly like the original, with gameplay very close to Warcraft II but with slight enhancements closer to StarCraft. It runs on Linux, Windows, and macOS (the macOS build is distributed as a GitHub Actions artifact) and is under active development.
How it differs from the original
Wargus adds slight gameplay enhancements that make it play somewhat more like StarCraft than the original Warcraft II.
Getting started
To play, you need to extract game data from your own Warcraft II installer; on macOS the built-in extractor tool currently has bugs, so a third-party workaround script is needed instead. Full install instructions for Linux, Windows, and macOS are hosted on the project's website.
Known limitations
- compatibility: Built-in extractor tool has bugs on macOS; a third-party script is available as a temporary workaround.
