About

Warzone 2100 was originally released in 1999 by Pumpkin Studios and published by Eidos Interactive as a 3D real-time strategy/tactics hybrid for Windows and PlayStation. Warzone 2100 is a free, open-source 3D real-time strategy game with a story-driven single-player campaign, online multiplayer for up to 10 players, local skirmish against AI, an extensive tech tree of over 400 technologies, and JavaScript-scriptable mods and campaigns. It supports Windows, macOS, and Linux, with multiple graphics backends (OpenGL, OpenGL ES, Vulkan), and is under active community development.

Getting started

Pre-built releases for Windows, macOS, and Linux are available from the project's website; Ubuntu users need to separately download narrative video files for in-game cutscenes. The game can also be built from source, and development snapshot builds are published from GitHub Actions.

History

In 2004, Eidos and Pumpkin Studios released the game's source code under the GPL — followed later by its music and video files — and a volunteer community, the 'Warzone 2100 Project,' has maintained and expanded it ever since, replacing all remaining proprietary technology with open-source equivalents.
