About

xoreos targets nine BioWare Aurora-engine games spanning from Neverwinter Nights (2002) to Dragon Age II (2011), including the Knights of the Old Republic duology, Jade Empire, Sonic Chronicles, and The Witcher. xoreos is an open-source, GPLv3-licensed reimplementation of BioWare's Aurora game engine and its derivatives, aiming to run engine-based titles from Neverwinter Nights through Dragon Age II in a portable way on Linux, macOS, and Windows. Development so far covers resource management, many file formats, graphics, and sound.

How it differs from the original

No title has actual 'normal' gameplay yet — targeted games currently only show partial in-game graphics, a 'spectator mode' for flying around explored areas, and rudimentary menus and scripting.

Getting started

Requires a full install of the original game's data files on disk. xoreos is run from the command line — pointing it at the game's install path (or a saved target name) launches it — since it doesn't yet have a launcher GUI.

Known limitations

  • gameplay: No actual "normal" gameplay is implemented yet; partial ingame graphics, menus, and a rudimentary script system are present.
Requires original assets. Requires the original game data files (fully installed/copied to disk) from games like Neverwinter Nights, Knights of the Old Republic, or Dragon Age.
