Ace of Spades was a 2012 first-person shooter and voxel-based sandbox game developed and published by Jagex, originally created by Ben Aksoy as a prototype released in April 2011; after acquisition by Jagex and full release in December 2012, it was shut down in March 2019 following poor reception. BetterSpades is an open-source, GPL-3.0-licensed reimplementation of the classic "voxlap" version of Ace of Spades, built without any of the original Jagex code. It targets very low-end systems down to OpenGL 1.1 (with OpenGL ES support), and its README documents builds for Windows, Linux, and macOS via CMake.
How it differs from the original
Because the copyright status of the original 0.75-era game assets is unknown, the build downloads a separate community asset pack via CMake instead of shipping or requiring the original game's files.
Getting started
After downloading a release or building it, the client can either run standalone from its own folder or be extracted directly into an existing Ace of Spades installation to replace the old voxlap client; on launch it shows a server list to join, and it also accepts direct "aos://" connection links as a command-line argument.
