About

Wizard of Wor is an arcade-style maze combat game (also released for the Commodore 64) in which one or two players fight monsters through dungeon levels, including special rounds against the Worluk and the Wizard. This is not the original Wizard of Wor source code but a reverse-engineered disassembly of the Commodore 64 version, published as heavily commented 64tass assembler source alongside a detailed written explanation of how the game's internals work (dungeon layout selection, monster behavior, warp doors, Magic Voice speech support, and more).

Getting started

The assembly source is compiled with the 64tass cross-assembler into a raw binary, which can be flashed to a cartridge or converted into a .crt image (using VICE's cartconv utility) for use with emulators or hardware like the 1541 Ultimate or Turbo Chameleon 64.

Additional notes

Trivia
According to the disassembly's author, the original game's Magic Voice speech synthesis could have sounded more natural, but its programmer Jeff Bruette pushed for a more robotic voice instead.
Easter egg
Holding Run/Stop + C= + Control during gameplay swaps the copyright message for a hidden credit to the original programmer.
